Born in 1952 in Arcueil (in the greater Paris area), Jean Paul Gaultier developed an interest in fashion from a very young age, but received no specific training other than at his grandmother's side. At the age of 18, he was hired by the Pierre Cardin house, work he poured heart and soul into after class. Jean Paul Gaultier's adventures in fragrance started in 1993 with Classique, a women's perfume infused with vanilla-tinged roses, that made an impact thanks to its corset-shaped bottle packaged in a tin can. The perfume was a hit, and quickly became the brand's signature scent. Buoyed by this first taste of success, Jean Paul Gaultier launched Le Mâle, an oriental fougère that rocketed to stardom, becoming Europe's best-selling fragrance and toppling most of the competition. The bottle is a reworking of the classic women's scent, enclosed in a Breton jersey-clad torso-shaped bottle, packaged again in a metal can.
