In 1978, James Dyson came up against a common problem: he found himself frustrated by his vacuum cleaner floundering as the bag filled up with dust. One day, he walked past a sawmill and noticed how a cyclone on top of a tower was sucking all the wood particles out of the air. He began wondering whether the same principle could be applied to a vacuum cleaner. Five years and 5,127 prototypes later, Dyson had invented the world's first bag-less vacuum. The product was first launched on the Japanese market, the spiritual home of emerging technologies. It soon became a status symbol, and won the International Design Fair prize in 1991. Sales of his G-Force allowed James Dyson to set up his own company, Dyson Ltd. Today, Dyson appliances are sold in over 65 countries around the world. Thanks to his science and engineering team, Dyson works tirelessly to continuously improve his machines, homing in on all aspects from fluid dynamics and robotics to acoustics and electronics.
